Rationale Behind Teaching Education For Sustainability
This report is designed to investigate the rationale behind teaching Education for Sustainability (EfS) in early childhood education, through investigating the relevant issues and concept of sustainability in relation to the pedagogies and principles of early years education. The initial part of this report will focus on three issues of sustainability, all falling under the greater sustainability concept of waste management. The report will then go on to articulate the role and importance of EfS in early years principles and pedagogies. Finally, some teaching strategies for teaching EfS will be outlined. ââ¬ËEnough, for all, forever.ââ¬â¢ This is sustainability as described by Charles Hopkins (2009), and gives a simple but meaningful definition of sustainability. Sustainability is about providing for ourselves in a way that will not irreparably deplete the earthââ¬â¢s resources, or inhibit future generations (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). Earthââ¬â¢s resources are decreasing at a rate never before seen, with drastic affects on our environment and hope for future development (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). Sustainability is the solution for this, teaching people to take better care of the planet and respecting itsââ¬â¢ natural limitations (Palmer, 2000).
