Software developments have been mainly in the operating systems; the programs that tell the computer what to do by defining the machine-user interface. Several operating systems have been developed by different professionals working in different institutions. Most of the present operating systems are developments of earlier operating systems. The type of the programming language used in developing different applications also explains the different types of operating systems that are available.
